HISTORY

Sometime in 1909, two men and two women made their way to a large house on the outskirts of Calgary, Alberta. They were greeted by their host, Mrs R.B. Winter, the wife of an eminent judge in the young city of 43,000. They had come together out of a common interest in sketching and continued to do so until the demands of the Great War made it difficult to carry on.

The names of these individuals were: Mrs R.B. Winter, Mr. E.A. Gratwick, Mr. G.O. Jones, and two sisters surnamed Parrot. Little did they realize that with their "Sketch Club", as Mrs Winter called it, they had formed the beginning of an association of artists in Calgary that would flourish and last for a century and more; The Calgary Sketch Club. The Calgary Art Club merged with Leighton's organization and meetings continued in downtown Calgary as before. The Calgary Sketch Club was incorporated under the Alberta Societies Act in September 1939 and continues to this day with membership limited to 100 artists.

Prominent members throughout the Club's century of existence, include, among others: A.C. Leighton, G.O. Jones, Roland Gissing, Ernie Lamb, and Margaret Shelton.
